Virtual Leader GameChanging Skills and Strategies of the New Enterprise Manager eBook EM Kaye

Overall I think Virtual Leader offers a great place to start for anyone just beginning their journey into the virtual space. There were some great quotes, many of which I actually know the person giving the quote. However, for the uninformed audience I would have liked to see their credentials along side their name, as opposed to just at the beginning of the book.

The case studies shown should give any reader enough background to at least get their brain churning with ideas on how they might relate virtual good and communities to their own business.

Virtual Leader GameChanging Skills and Strategies of the New Enterprise Manager eBook EM Kaye Reviews

"Leadership in a virtual enterprise is less about entitlement or hierarchy and more about relationships and outcomes."
This sentence from the first chapters sets the overall tone for the book - and identifies the most challenging prospect for virtual enterprises. It would be a nice sentence in general, but in virtual environments, customers, partners, colleagues... are unforgiving when facing rigid, unresponsive, bland interactions. It is about making things happening, about developing and sustaining relationships, and this in itself is a laudable proposition for a book on enterprise-use of modern virtual environments. The book converts this into palpable, concrete ideas, with easy-to-grasp terminology. I'd never heard of a leader having to be a Stereotype Buster or an Instant Gratification Guru, but as I read it, the appeal and sense of these terms caught me from the start.
Most books simply produce their concepts with little support for sources. This is to some extent also a problem in this book, particularly since most of it arises from interviews and meetings with industry leaders and experienced professionals. But the approach used - to include direct quotations of aspects provided by these experts, alongside the text that expands and explains the concepts - is sensible and helps provide a better perspective on the groundings (albeit without academic rigour - but this is clearly not a book for academics).
The book could use more pictures for clarity, though. For instance, the game-changing strategies summarized in chapter 3 and 4 would clearly benefit from sample images. Also, these strategies are not so much strategies as sample ideas the book would be significantly better by expanding these with some details on how they were implemented in terms of business and management practices, how complex or resource-heavy their implementation was, and other breadcrumbs to help set doers in motion.
Overall, I believe the main public for this book will be managers wanting a brief, to-the-point guide to the major themes at stake in virtual environments, to decide on whether to pursue them and how virtual worlds, social Web, Facebook, and similar platforms. It isn't enough to do anything from the information it contains alone, but having a summarized and overall perspective of the main themes (tools, people, required skills) is often hard to find, since most resources are too detailed, aiming at people who have already made up their minds on this path.
It is not a book for people which already have an interest in these matters, since they will be aware of most of the general perspective provided. And while the skills mentioned in the beginning are interesting, as is the wide list of corporate examples of virtual environment use, they won't satisfy the appetite of those who already have tasted these platforms.
What is the "virtual world"? What are the essential leadership traits managers and leaders need to have and strategies they need to use in order to become successful in the virtual world? And what are the emerging trends we should look for? To our great benefit, in Virtual Leader, E. M. Kaye succeeds in answering these questions while leading the reader though mini case studies, insights, and best practices shared by thought leaders in the industry.

The "virtual world" consists of immersive environments and emerging technologies ranging from online games to mobile technologies, including Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), serious games used in education, social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, 3D environments, smartphones and tablets. These are exciting technologies used successfully to engage their users, so more organizations are looking into implementing them in their companies in order to improve communication and employee collaboration.

Virtual Leader includes five chapters that follow in a logical order. Chapter 1 starts with a brief summary of the current state of virtual worlds, as well as terms such as "Social Media," "gamification," "Mobile," and "Virtual Goods" and high level information about what they mean in this field. The reader who is new to virtual worlds will find these terms helpful. Chapter 2 lists fifteen "game-changing skills" of the virtual leader who leads the organization successfully through emerging technologies, inspires employees, and engages customers. The successful virtual leader, for instance "is a fearless new technology evangelist, a three dimensional thinker, a savvy networker, a fighter of stereotypes, a coach, a super sales person, a pilot navigator, an entertainer and an entrepreneur who never forgets the core goals of the enterprise and always remembers that the marketplace is now virtual." Each of these traits is explained along with examples. Chapters 3-4 most valuable with their mini case studies, best practices, and brief success stories by leaders who already use virtual strategies inside their companies for recruiting, training, communication, and also outside their organizations for branding and engaging. These observations and insights are among the book's key strengths and will benefit those who are either new to the topic and would like to explore it, and also professionals who are experienced with emerging technologies. Chapter 5 is devoted to major trends in virtual worlds to watch for in the near future, including virtual education, strategic alliances, social TV, 3D technology, gamification, augmented reality, and mobile wallets (AKA virtual wallets). Especially remarkable in chapter 5 is the attention given to the impact demographics will have, in particular that of children and women.

The last part of the book provides resources that consist of a list of recent publications from articles to books. It also lists organizations and brands. Although it's not quite clear what this long list of organizations means, the resources section is another of the book's strengths as it lists research initiatives, specific testimonials, Virtual Leader publications, and info about the association. Most surprising is that the list of 25 contributors with their short biographical notes is at the beginning of the book instead of the end along with other resources. These contributors range from experts in emerging media to executives and although their bios are interesting, at least for consistency of style this section could use some editing. It is also worthy to note that there are no photos or illustrations throughout this volume. Readers of Virtual Leader who are new to the topic would find images or links to visual examples most helpful.

Virtual Leader is quite informative and accomplishes what it sets out to do with great skill and insight and provides a welcome addition to other books dealing with virtual environments. Virtual Leader is not an academic study and should not be assessed as one. This inspiring volume is most suitable for today's influencers and decision makers in business, including managers, directors, executives, and learning professionals who are new to the topic and are interested in learning more about it or are looking for ways to improve engagement and collaboration among employees in their organizations by incorporating innovative approaches and technologies that other organizations have implemented successfully.

Virtual worlds' designs are sweeping corporations, academia, and the military. This essential reference not only describes the fifteen essential skills of developing virtual leaders; but provides an overview of over 50 virtual archetypes along with salient guidance from today's virtual leaders. Virtual Leader, is a requisite "virtual strategies roadmap" for all leaders committed to innovation today!
